The concept of “neo-Asianism” has been applied mostly in cultural and economical fields, but recently it is reflected more and more in architecture. “Neo-Asianism” mainly refers to architects’ recognition of contemporary architectural design under the trend of globally cultural interchange. Strong Asian regional culture has been regarded as the foundation which combines with modern western culture to improve the function. In this way, Asian excellent traditional culture has been developed very well, at the same time, being more suitable for modern lifestyle.

This book has carefully selected more than forty Asian residential developments which have been distributed into three cultural districts, namely East Asia, Southeast Asia and West Asia. In this way, it conveys that in different Asian areas, architects have different understandings and practices on neo-Asianism architecture. The three areas mentioned above have the most representative architectural styles in Asia, thus the projects, which are selected, are mainly sourced from well-known architects’ products. Thousands of high definition pictures and detailed design explanation explore the breakthrough and changes of Asian architecture in terms of design style and development mode in this new era. 區(qū)域分析

Regional Analysis
Geographical Location: Southeast Asia consists of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and east Timor. Besides individual countries which are not coastally located, these nations enjoy extending coastlines and waters mostly belong to Indian Ocean. Thus, the regional architecture combines with Southeast Asian island features and delicate cultural taste. On one hand, restrained by geography and traffic, materials are locally sourced and residents could get infinitely close to the nature; on the other hand, the architecture is influenced by local culture and this is a kind of expression towards regional architectural features.

Local Conditions and Customs: Southeast Asia is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. There are many Chinese people living in a compact community. Because of the geography and history, Southeast Asia is deeply influenced by China, India and colonial culture, for example, Xieng Khuan Buddiha Park in Laos, whose architectural forms are in traditional Indian style. Moreover, Singapore has many buildings with verandas and this was formulated by Raffles. These places were offered to foreigners for doing business and then evolved into a kind of special feature buildings.

Climate: Because of the low latitude and seafront location, Southeast Asia is mainly dominated by tropical monsoon climate and tropical rainy climate. Thus, the architectural design emphasizes spatial draftiness and heat insulation. Cross-ventilation has been achieved through large fence, the split-level layout and drafty processing, etc.

Religious Belief: Southeast Asia is mainly religiously dominated by Buddhism, Christianity and Catholicism. The top of the temples is made by timbers to showcase strong Thai architectural style.

Contrast between the Old and the New
Traditional Folk House: In Southeast Asia, the living pattern is closely linked with the ecological nature. Materials are mainly sourced from natural bamboo, timber, rock and earth. Architectural ecology is regarded as the principal character of vernacular architecture in Southeast Asia. Stilt houses are the most common and the roof of this kind of houses is a more important manifestation than walls. The large sloping roofs, together with twitch-grass and unique architectural forms, directly reflect the connection with local hot humid climate. Ornaments are the basic elements of Southeast Asian folk houses. They capture the essence of traditional decorative art in terms of manifestation and technology. As for architectural facades, the facades are basically simple without curved processing. Sun-shading structure is inevitable to reduce the penetration of solar radiation by adding deep eaves and sunshade frames.

Modern Residence: The modern transformation of Southeast Asian dwelling buildings is a very good paragon because it doesn’t give up those excellent suitability and cultural elements in traditional folk houses such as courtyard, front porch and sloping roof, etc. Only building materials are changed into modern reinforced concrete and the technology of laying bricks or stones is applied. Architectural forms are mainly made up of four parts: corridor, Thai-style pinnacle, water feature, solid wood and stone, still being traditional and approachable. The overall style embodies natural, healthy and leisurely characteristics. There is still an extensive use of natural materials such as rattan, bamboo, yellow wood and stone, etc.
